Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Peer Health Assistance Programs provide comprehensive services to addiction counselors, dentists, nurses, marriage and family therapists, pharmacists, professional counselors, psychologists, social workers, unlicensed psychotherapists, veterinarians, emergency medical service provider, and other licensed providers who may be experiencing physical, emotional, psychological, substance use problems or other personal concerns. Programs are funded by license fees and services are delivered by professionals at Peer Assistance Services, Inc. The objectives are the protection of the public and the rehabilitation of the professional.

  • PAS maintains strict confidentiality of a professional’s records and protected health information in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Under the circumstances detailed below, PAS is required to report a voluntary professional to their respective Regulatory Board by their assigned PAS ID number only. After reviewing the information, the Regulatory Board decides if PAS will continue to confidentially monitor the professional or disclose the professional’s identity to their respective board.

    • PAS determines the professional is not safe to practice with reasonable skill and safety

    • A report of diversion

    • A report of impairment in the workplace

    • A complaint was filed against the professional’s license

    • The professional signs a Cease Practice Agreement

    • PAS recommends a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract and the professional declines to sign it

    • The professional is noncompliant with the Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract

  • If you are a licensed/certified addiction counselor, dentist, nurse, marriage and family therapist, pharmacist, pharmacy intern, professional counselor, psychologist, social worker, unlicensed psychotherapist, veterinarian, or emergency medical service provider there is no cost for services provided by PAS to include, comprehensive evaluation, case management, monitoring, referrals to treatment and resources.

    Program clients are responsible for the cost of random drug testing treatment, therapy, psychiatry, or other requirements outlined in your Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract. The cost of treatment, therapy, or psychiatry vary depending on insurance and provider.

    We are pleased to provide Peer Health Assistance services to multiple licensed professionals. Individuals who are not covered by a statutorily created program funded by license fees may access services on a self-pay basis.

    Who may access services on a self-pay basis?

    • Nursing license is expired, revoked/relinquished, or otherwise do not have a license.

    • Pharmacy or Pharmacy Intern license is expired, revoked/relinquished, or otherwise do not have a license.

    • Dental license is expired, revoked/relinquished, or otherwise do not have a license.

    • Dental Assistant or Dental Hygienist

    • Veterinary license is expired, revoked/relinquished, or otherwise do not have a license.

    • Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technologist

    • Mental Health professional license is expired, revoked/relinquished, or otherwise do not have a license.

    • Student of nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine or mental health professions

    • Other Professionals including anyone licensed, certified, or registered with the Department of Regulatory Agencies. These Professionals may include, but are not limited to, chiropractors, respiratory therapists, athletic trainers, speech and language pathologists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, optometrists, physical therapists, surgical technologists, naturopathic doctors, and occupational therapists.

    If you are a licensed professional who does not have a program in-statute, are unlicensed or certified, or are a student, the evaluation cost is $1,500, due at the time of the service. If you agree to a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract, you are responsible for the costs outlined as well as a $50 monthly monitoring fee.

  • Engaging in in the Peer Health Assistance Program begins with an intake, conducted by our Intake Coordinator. Our Intake Coordinator will then schedule you an appointment with one of our Evaluators who will conduct a comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation and make safety to practice recommendations. If treatment and monitoring is recommended, a Case Manager will formulate a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract based on the evaluation. Case Managers will provide referrals to treatment, other resources, and continually support clients throughout the duration of a Contract.

  • The length and requirements of a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract vary dependent upon the individual and involvement of a Regulatory Board. Following signing a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract, the following phases will be initiated:

    • Structured monitoring

      • May include treatment, random drug testing, recovery support activities and meetings, therapy, psychiatric or psychological evaluation, pain management evaluation, phone, telehealth and in-person meetings with your Case Manager, relapse prevention, and modification of practice.

    • Less structured monitoring; may include continued treatment if necessary.

    • Discharge from PAS.

  • Clients on a Rehabilitation and Monitoring Contract are required to abstain from mind- and mood-altering drugs/substances, including but not limited to: alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, prescription analgesics, nitrous oxide, psychoactive (mind and mood altering) drugs not otherwise listed, poppy seeds, CBD, kombucha, over the counter medications containing alcohol, and/or potentially addicting medications.

    You can obtain written verification from your physician, dentist or other health care provider who recommends or lawfully prescribes any substance. The verification will state that the healthcare provider has been notified of your participation in the program and the reason for your participation. Copies of all prescriptions must be provided to Peer Assistance Services, (PAS) within 24 hours of receipt.

  • PAS accepts referrals from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Colorado Department of Health and Environment, employers, providers, attorneys, family members, and self-referrals. PAS cannot take anonymous referrals and mandate someone to the program; however, we can provide consultation and information for anonymous concerns regarding a professional we serve.

  • We do not provide full program services outside of business hours; however, we do have an after-hours information line outside of regular business hours and on holidays – 303-369-0039 x235. Our on-call staff will return your call within 2 hours. Please note that our after-hours information line is not a crisis line.
